The significance of spirituality in healthcare and especially near end of life, and thus the importance of the provision of spiritual care within palliative care, is recognised in all standards at the state, national and international level.
What does spiritual care involve?
Spiritual Care is provided by practitioners to appropriately meet the individual’s spiritual and emotional needs. It may include presence, conversations, ritual, ceremonies, and when requested, the sharing of sacred texts and resources. While religion is a core part of spirituality for some, for many others personal spirituality is totally independent of religion. Spiritual well-being sees aspects of relationships, values, and a meaningful purpose in life interwoven into the fabric of our human experience.
Spiritual Care Week gives opportunities for organisations and institutions of all kinds and types to recognise the spiritual caregivers in their midst and the ministry which the caregivers provide.
There are a number of events and activities available for Spiritual Care Week 2024 through Spiritual Care Australia, which can be accessed here.
